When a guy’s catchphrase is “I’ll be back,” you have to figure he won’t let old age keep him down. Netflix has released a teaser trailer for its upcoming spy action-comedy series FUBAR, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. FUBAR sees Arnold play a former CIA agent who postpones his retirement when he “discovers a family secret.” Monica Barbaro, Jay Baruchel, Aparna Brielle, Fortune Feimster, Fabiana Udenio, and Gabriel Luna co-star with Arnold, while Nick Santora will serve as showrunner. FUBAR will arrive on Netflix on May 25, 2023, and you can see the teaser trailer below:
If this teaser is indicative of the tone, FUBAR could be a lot of fun. Despite his diminishing star in the past couple of years (it’s hard to hear one of your childhood heroes and someone you consider the perfect example of the American Dream say, “Screw your freedom”), it feels good to see Arnold back in action. It looks like FUBAR will play into his age, which could go either way. They could have a lot of fun with an Arnold whose advanced years are catching up with him, especially if they draw on his iconic past and screen image, which few know how to do as well as Arnold. On the other hand, I don’t want to see Arnold be completely emasculated and put out to pasture; he needs to be awesome, to do some impossible feats of strength, and to kick substantially more ass than anyone else on the show. Otherwise, why bring him back? And Arnold can pull it off despite his age. I still cheered in Escape Plan when he ripped that massive machine gun off the helicopter and laid waste to the bad guys because he’s Arnold, and Arnold makes you believe. It’s encouraging that this show comes from Nick Santora, the guy behind the highly entertaining Reacher on Amazon. If he brings some of the sensibilities from that show to FUBAR, and he gets Arnold enough to keep him Arnold, this could be great.
