Black Widow Special Look Hits the Internet

Marvel gave everyone a sting this week when they released a Black Widow special look (which is different from a trailer because reasons). Directed by Cate Shortland, Black Widow finds Scarlett Johansson’s sleek and sexy Avenger on a personal mission that took place between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. In addition to Johansson, Black Widow stars Florence Pugh, Rachel Weisz, and David Harbour, and releases on May 1, 2020. Check out the Black Widow special look below:

That was short and sweet, which is probably their best bet. Marvel may have their work cut out for them with some of their impending lineup, but Black Widow should be an easy sell. People love the character and Scarlett Johansson in the part; her simply being one of the original Avengers will likely draw people to the theater. The Black Widow special look has some footage from the trailer, but there are plenty of new tidbits to make it a worthwhile watch. Some of Natasha’s lines suggest that she’s wavering in her belief that joining the Avengers was the right decision, and that maybe she’ll always be the killer her Russian masters designed her to be. I wouldn’t be surprised if the thrust of the movie is her realizing this isn’t true and intensifying her efforts to find Captain America and rejoin the Avengers. If that’s the case, it’s an even bigger shame this movie wasn’t made and released in Phase 3 where it belonged; it’s the perfect story to lead into the end of the Infinity Saga and Natasha’s ultimate choice. (And if I like Black Widow, which I expect I will, that’s exactly where it’s going in my collection when it hits Blu-Ray.) Natasha also says something about “a new world of Widows” in the Black Widow special look, which indicates she may be facing down a bunch of her lethal counterparts. Then, there’s the best look at Taskmaster we’ve had yet, and I like him so far. He mimics her moves exactly, just as he should, and I think that makes him the right villain for Natasha; he’s a human, but one who can outmatch her fighting style, as opposed to another alien or monster like she faces with the Avengers. I’m curious to see how a lot of this plays out. Are those characters literally her family, or do they just fill those roles in a makeshift sort of way? What is Taskmaster up to? What made Natasha go home in the first place? It should be fun, if only to see Natasha back in action.
