Bosch: Legacy to End With Season 3

Amazon has announced that Bosch: Legacy will end with season 3, which airs starting in March of 2025. This will be the tenth season of Bosch and Bosch: Legacy, the longest-running streaming franchise to date. Titus Welliver plays Michael Connelly’s iconic book character Harry Bosch, at first a steadfast policeman. Over the course of the first Bosch series, Harry grows disillusioned with the politics amongst the force and the handling of crucial cases. Bosch: Legacy follows Harry as he becomes a private investigator, taking on crime his own way. Legacy also features Bosch’s daughter Maddie and defense attorney Honey Chandler as principal characters. Maddie grew up over the course of Bosch and now works as a low-level cop herself. At the end of season 2, Maddie learned a dark secret that may challenge how she sees her father. Honey has been through it all with Bosch, first battling with him, then defending him in the courtroom. Now, they work together. She survived an attempt on her life, but it has left her afraid and unsure. While the end is near for the Bosch title on TV, Titus Welliver will continue playing his character in the upcoming Renée Ballard spinoff for Amazon, in which Maggie Q will play the title role. Ballard is in the Bosch books and has her own stories now, too. The spinoff is expected to hit Amazon Prime and Freevee in the fall of 2025. Check out what Vernon Sanders, Head of Television at Amazon MGM Studios, had to say about these developments (via Deadline):

“For 10 years, Bosch and Bosch: Legacy have been two of our most defining series for Prime Video, Freevee and Amazon MGM Studios. They are a testament to the enduring power of the storytelling universe that Michael Connelly built for the fans. We are proud of the impact these series have made, and we are excited that Michael, Titus, Henrik and the creative team have more engaging stories to tell in the Bosch world with the final season of Bosch: Legacy, our new Ballard series and more to come.”

And Bosch author Michael Connelly offered this:

“I am so proud of what we have accomplished with this show. Ten years ago I asked Titus Welliver if he could stick with Harry Bosch for five seasons, and he said he could do it forever. Well, five became 10, and the character, thanks to Titus, will live forever in the hearts of viewers and in the streaming world as the detective who knows that everybody counts or nobody counts. The good news here is that we have not seen the last of Harry Bosch. As in the books, Bosch is part of the Renée Ballard world, and I can’t wait for the next chapter to open.”

Michael Connelly, Eric Overmyer, Tom Bernardo, Henrik Bastin, Pieter Jan Brugge, and Titus Welliver executive Bosch: Legacy for Fabel Entertainment.

Well, I wasn’t expecting this news. I know Bosch has been going for a decade now if you count both shows, but it doesn’t feel that way for me. I’m sorry to say I’m not a big reader; I like audiobooks but struggle to find the time and discipline to read physical ones, though I actually prefer to have physical copies of things. Anyway, I only got into these shows a year or so ago when my husband started watching Bosch obsessively. I caught season 3 onwards, give or take an episode, and I loved it. Looking back, my favorite seasons are 2 and 7. They have great stories, 2 has an awesome set of villains, and I just love Harry’s struggles and resolve in 7. I love these shows because the characters feel so real – mostly Bosch and Maddie, but Lt. Billets and Chief Irving as well. It has killed me that they don’t feature much in Legacy, although I obviously understand why. Season 2 of Legacy was wild, and I think, overall, an improvement over season 1. But that’s why this makes me sad; Bosch had seven years to improve, and it really did. Season 1 wasn’t anything special or even that interesting at times, but there are points in seasons 6 and 7 where I almost cried. I felt despair during season 7, and when Bosch made his ultimate decision, I felt it. I will watch the Ballard series, and I can hardly argue that Bosch hasn’t had its time in the sun. But I will miss it, and I think Legacy needed and deserved more time to shine.
