Box Office Breakdown for Weekend of 3/2/25

What’s up, Geeks + Gamers? It’s ODIN!

Captain America: Brave New World Still Trails Quantumania by 12.5%

Even though Captain America: Brave New World has once again taken the #1 spot at the domestic box office, it continues to trail behind Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania by roughly 13% domestically and 18.8% globally. With no competition, one would expect Brave New World to easily dominate the box office and make up some ground against Quantumania, but it seems it is doing so quite slowly in both camps. Matters won’t be helped when next week’s Mickey 17 releases, as early tracking indicates a domestic opening of around $20 million, which should easily take the #1 spot away from Brave New World. As we continue to call balls and strikes on this, however, there isn’t much competition for Brave New World’s audience until (debatably) the release of Disney’s Snow White on March 21st. Though the latest live-action flick with an insanely high budget is tracking quite low (hovering in the $50s of millions domestically for its opening frame), the increase in known movie titles will likely not help the struggling Brave New World, especially as international markets start to shift their focus. Remember that even if we assume that Brave New World only cost $300 million to make (very fair considering what we know about how much Disney overspends compared to the “estimates” they report to trades), the movie is still about +$250 million in the red and is currently tracking well below the average multiplier when compared to the opening weekend and week-2 box office numbers. There is still a good chance the movie doesn’t cross $400 million worldwide, which would make it one of the worst box office totals for any MCU film. Currently, with 154 reviews on Criticless, the film has maintained a 29% “Bogus” rating… well-earned, I must admit.

According to the-numbers.com, the top 5 this weekend domestically were:

  1. Captain America: Brave New World (47% drop in 3rd weekend)
  2. Last Breath ($7.8 million as a new release)
  3. The Monkey (55% drop in 2nd weekend)
  4. Paddington in Peru (31% drop in 3rd weekend)
  5. Dog Man (28% drop in 5th weekend)

The Monkey is Profit Bound

After opening well last weekend and enjoying a solid 63% “Rad” score over on Criticless, the low-budget horror film The Monkey is expected to make a decent profit when all is said and done. With a two-week total of roughly $28 million, we can now project that the movie will make between $40,791,887 and $57,108,642 globally by the end of its run. Based on its $10 million budget, the movie will likely make around $15 million in net profits, which is enough not only to make back the budget and likely marketing but also to pay for a future film’s production and marketing with a similar budget. Keep in mind that this film is likely to do well on VOD and will have some decent physical media sales to boot. Knowing very little about The Monkey myself, unless there was something clearly making this a one-off film, a new horror franchise is very likely to have just been born.

Tonight is The Raven Awards!

box office, The Raven Awards

And now, for some personal shilling, I invite you all to join me on my main personal channel, OMB Reviews, for the 7th Annual Raven Awards! For years, I watched the Oscars and loved finding out what movies and actors were joining the history books and whose predictions were right or wrong. Over a decade ago, the Oscars started to fall steeply in their ability to award the best of the best and fell into the oblivion of partisan left-wing politics to such a degree as to have even the White House involved in announcing the night’s biggest award.

Seven years ago, I decided to launch my own “awards” show called The Ravens to air on the same night as the Oscars to give people not only an alternative to the modern Hollywood nonsense but also to give them a voice in deciding the nominees and winners. In the beginning, my audience helped choose categories that would include the recognizable like Best Film of the Year, Best Writing, etc., but would also include more fun categories like Shill of the Year, Worst Movie of the Year, etc. Over time, the show has grown into a fun 2-3 hour event that allows us to truly celebrate the best in cinema from 2024 and rightfully roast the absolute worst.
