Box Office Breakdown for Weekend of 9/29/24

What’s up, Geeks & Gamers? It’s ODIN!

The Wild Robot Surprises With a Solid Opening

Just when it looked like there was no more animated magic at the box office, along came Universal’s new film, The Wild Robot, which has been showered with praise and is potentially set to be a massive hit at the box office. While the so-called industry “experts” were projecting that the film would only make about +$20 million in its domestic debut, it instead made about $35 million domestically and $53,065,000 worldwide. With solid reviews from audiences and critics, this bodes well for The Wild Robot’s future.

On average, movies make about a third of their entire global box office in their first weekend. If this holds true for The Wild Robot, it would mean that the film has a good chance of making about $173 million worldwide by the end of its run. To be honest, it seems likely that this movie will do much better than that, as it is currently tracking ahead of where The Garfield Movie (2024) was over the summer, and that film was able to end its run at around $255 million. With a reported budget of only $78 million, there is good reason to expect The Wild Robot to be able to make a fair profit when all is said and done… not to mention the post-theatrical prospects for this film are also already looking quite good.

According to the-numbers.com, the top 5 this weekend domestically were:

  1. The Wild Robot ($35 million as a new release)
  2. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (38% drop in 4th weekend)
  3. Transformers One (62% drop in 2nd weekend)
  4. Devara Part 1 ($5.6 million as a new release)
  5. Speak No Evil (26% drop in 3rd weekend)

Megalopolis is a Massive Flop… Megaflopolis Confirmed

The brand new film from Francis Ford Coppola, which has received much hype and anticipation (and not for the right reasons), has officially been released, and we can now formally say… MegaFlopolis has been born! Not only did the film cost roughly $120 million to make – with a lot of that coming from Coppola himself, as this is a massive vanity/passion project for him – but as of this writing, the movie has only made about $4 million in its grand opening. Yes, you read that correctly, and there are no 0s missing. With this paltry opening, we can project that Megalopolis is looking at -$177,800,000 in losses, and there is no expectation for that number to get much better. Not only will the film likely lose $150 million or more by the end of its run, but it is also now in the running for biggest box office bomb of 2024… yikes.

Transformers One Bombs On a Small Budget

Though I have been hearing many people sing the praises of Transformers One as a return to form for the franchise and a film worth watching, it is clear moviegoing audiences do not feel the same way and that the once reliable Transformers-friendly crowds are now long gone. The shadow of Michael Bay continues to cast large over the entire franchise, as we can project now that this latest film, which had a reported budget of about $75 million, will lose about -$60 million when its box office run ends. We can also project that the worldwide total for Transformers One will be between $102,806,369 and $143,928,916, which will make it one of the worst box office runs for a Transformers movie in modern history, if not the worst. Some may try to argue that it is too early to project or that the toy sales will make up for the losses; the problem with the first argument is that there are no indications that any market is waiting in the wings to save this one. As for the second argument about toys… those sell well every year and are not likely to sell much better primarily from this new release. Ultimately, the takeaway has to be that Bay destroyed this franchise, theatrically speaking, ox

I went to go see Wild Robot. Enjoyed it. Everyone talks about the family aspect, teaching the gosling to eat, swim and fly, but to me, the far deeper message was that the Robot had to rewrite itself to console and to tell stories and to adapt to different animals. So, there was this aspect of programming, so a beaver would eat wood or a skunk would spray and the fox talked about it’s nature but to the robot, their nature was programming, so the robot learned to overwrite it’s programming with animal nature. There was also a part about being where you belong but there comes a time where you belong among who you with to be around as opposed to a place where you belong, but no longer fit in. There was a heavy emphasis on programming and getting memory erased that I thought was very profound and super interesting in the digital age where we get messages to follow what the algo says from Big Tech and I found this movie to be anti-Big Tech in message, which made it subversive and very excellent.
