What’s up, Geeks + Gamers? It’s ODIN!
After months of speculation and a lot of built-up hype through effective marketing, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is here, and to put it simply… it is dominating the box office. Though the movie itself is a bit of a mixed bag and has gotten a lot of mixed reviews from fans, its box office success is already quite clear. Opening to roughly $110 million domestically and around $145 million globally, the film is well on its way to making a profit. With a budget of about $100 million, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice needs to make between $250-$300 million globally in order to break even. With what it has made so far, it is currently looking at only about -$75 million in losses after just opening. If we consider that, on average, movies make about a third of their entire box office in their global opening, it means that we could see Beetlejuice Beetlejuice end its run with between $400-$500 million, which would be a huge win for Warner Bros. and everyone else involved.
Some are speculating that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice may end up seeing a massive drop off in its second weekend, as it seems that this movie is likely to be very front-loaded, with most people showing up to see it first before reviews and spoilers potentially take away some of the fun. Though this could theoretically happen, it does not seem likely because the movie has been holding strong in its day-to-day and, in some ways, is performing better. Its $110 million total is well above the industry estimate, which was around $80 million, and is still above the adjusted projection after its opening, which was set to around $90 million. Essentially, the movie has been outperforming every single “professional projection” even after adjustments were made. This is usually a sign of a strong film, and it is likely we will see that continue into the week and hold over until next weekend as well. With no major wide releases next weekend and only one new film that may compete for some of the target audience (See No Evil is expected to have a solid opening, but nothing crazy), there is a strong chance Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will be able to win the top spot next weekend as well.
According to the-numbers.com, the top 5 this weekend domestically were:
Several people have reached out about the film Reagan, which was a low-performing film from last weekend. The movie had a strong week-2 hold of about 32%, which, in most cases, would be a good sign of future longevity. The problem with Reagan is that it opened quite weakly, and the reported budget of about $25 million is high enough to leave its chances of breaking even quite low. With a two-week total of about $18,531,480, I can project that the film will likely only make between $26,473,543 and $37,062,960. If it lands between these two numbers, it will mean losses of about -$15-$25 million. Though it would still have the potential to make money post-theatrically, with VOD, physical media, and streaming rights potentially being lucrative, it still has a ways to go before it reaches that point. All in all, Reagan’s week-2 hold is strong but not really enough to make it successful because of how small the opening weekend was.

First time I went to the website. Kind of ashamed of myself for being so slow.
I wanted to see AfrAId, but heard mixed things about it.
Did also hear that Didi was good. I’m liking those smaller budget personal films. Guess there’s another one called Going Varsity in Mariachi. I like the title of it.
