Kabrutus is getting more attention every day. Recently, CBC Radio, the radio division of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, ran an article about Kabrutus, Sweet Baby Inc., and Kabrutus’ Sweet Baby Inc. Detected curator. It’s nothing you haven’t read before: Kabrutus started a “targeted harassment campaign” by providing information available on the Sweet Baby Inc. website; Sweet Baby Inc. employees claim to be getting death threats while providing no evidence of such; Sweet Baby Inc.’s tactics against Kabrutus are glossed over despite being an actual, provable harassment campaign; GamerGate is back, and this time, it’s personal; you know the score. To their credit, they do acknowledge that Kabrutus has specifically asked people not to harass anyone in any way, which is big of them, I guess – although it’s somewhat marred by their earlier labeling of him as “the leader of the cyberharassment campaign.” But what makes this stand out most is that the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation is run by the Canadian government; this is a government media outlet talking about Kabrutus and trying to run interference for Sweet Baby Inc. According to Bounding Into Comics (whose Spencer Baculi mentions me by name in his article; thanks, Mr. Baculi!), they have done this before, but this appears to be the first time they mentioned Kabrutus by name.
It’s not like anyone expects much from the Canadian government on this score. They’re not exactly impartial when it comes to the culture wars, and like all governments, they’re not afraid of weighing in on things they don’t understand or probably even care about much. But it’s fascinating to see the attention Kabrutus is getting in such a short amount of time. Government-run news organizations are talking about him! Sure, they’re unfairly smearing him and obfuscating the truth about Sweet Baby Inc. (They quote Sweet Baby employees and game developers about how the role of consulting firms is being misconstrued, but they conveniently leave out the video of Sweet Baby Inc. CEO Kim Belair encouraging game developer employees to “terrify” their marketing departments into making their games DEI compliant.) But they’re taking notice of him, and that’s proof that he’s making an impact on the gaming industry. I can’t imagine where this will go in the coming months. By the way, Sweet Baby Inc.
