Candace Cameron Bure is celebrating her religion, so of course, Hollywood is coming for her. The former Full House star has a new contract with the burgeoning cable network Great American Family, and she’s developing a series of Christmas movies with an emphasis on Christianity. Cable network Christmas movies are familiar territory for Bure, who starred in plenty of them for Hallmark before leaving the channel. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Bure said that Hallmark “basically is a completely different network than when I started because of the change of leadership.” As for her new business partners, she explains, “I knew that the people behind Great American Family were Christians that love the Lord and wanted to promote faith programming and good family entertainment.”
So, what’s the problem? This:
“Asked if she expects her new channel to feature same-sex couples as leads in holiday movies, Mrs. Bure said no. ‘I think that Great American Family will keep traditional marriage at the core,’ she said.”
To anyone normal, this should be fine. Bure is making “traditional” Christian-themed movies; why would they be about gay characters? Moreover, she’s a free American who can make any movie she wants, provided she’s got funding and an agreeable distributor, which she does. She didn’t try to force Hallmark to make her films; she left and found a network that was in sync with her. She’s also being sensible about it; her movies will have a niche audience, and she understands that, so she’s making them with a small cable company and promoting them to her fans. Compare that to something like Bros, where they tried to mainstream a very niche concept (if we’re being honest, it’s more niche than Bure’s Christian movies, and not by a little) and fell on their faces, calling the whole world bigots along the way.
But live and let live is never enough for the Left, and the inevitable first shot has been fired by Hilarie Burton, an actress whose name pops up now again in headlines I tend to skip but who was apparently the lead of One Tree Hill. (I originally typed Gossip Girl before double-checking; I swear that’s true.) Like Bure, she has also appeared in some Hallmark Christmas movies. Here’s what she had to say:
Bigot.
I don’t remember Jesus liking hypocrites like Candy.
But sure. Make your money, honey. You ride that prejudice wave all the way to the bank. https://t.co/X70aO4WIcB— Hilarie Burton Morgan (@HilarieBurton) November 15, 2022
Now they’re just openly admitting their bigotry.
I called this shit out years ago when Abbott was at Hallmark. Glad they dumped him.
Being LGBTQ isn’t a “trend”.
That guy and his network are disgusting. You too Candy. There is nothing untraditional about same-sex couples. https://t.co/38XIg5XeMP— Hilarie Burton Morgan (@HilarieBurton) November 14, 2022
It’s worth noting that this raving loon isn’t gay or another letter of the ever-increasing alphabet that started with LGBT, at least as far as I can tell. She’s married to Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and I haven’t found any statements about her being bisexual or anything else. I think that’s important because the knee-jerk reaction to rants like this is to blame that community, so Burton isn’t doing them any favors as she rails in their defense. But what is she protecting them from, exactly? Not being represented in a religious cable movie? Is the demand that gay people be in absolutely everything? Or should Bure have lied and said, “Maybe”? That’s what would have made her a hypocrite; instead, Bure is being above-board with her goals when making these movies. She’s also not trying to shame anyone into watching them – again, unlike the people behind Bros. Bure’s carved out a niche for herself, and I doubt Hilarie Burton will be the last one to piss and moan about it. But in the end, Bure will make her movies, and everyone else will just have to get on with their life.
But that’s nothing; wait till they find out that Bure said “Christmas” instead of “holiday.”
