A prohibition-era gangster is ready for his next close up as the first trailer for Capone (formerly known as Fonzo) has arrived online. The film is helmed by Chronicle and Fantastic Four director Josh Trank and stars Venom’s Tom Hardy. The Capone trailer opens amid brief shots of Al Capone’s violent life (such as the St Valentine’s Day Massacre) as we see a Capone in his final years, suffering from dementia, something of which the FBI is dubious as they search for money Capone may have hidden. The Capone trailer culminates as we hear our titular character via voiceover talk about how “the only thing that really matters is how a man should spend.”
Growing up during the era of The Sopranos and watching The Godfather over and over, I’ve been fascinated by real-life crime figures like Capone and his exploits with Chicago crime boss Johnny Torrio. As such, I’ve been following this film on and off since it was announced, particularly because it covers a period of his life that has often been little more than a footnote in his bloody history. While I’m a fan of Trank’s work, it’s Tom Hardy about whom I’m really excited. Amid all of his wonderful roles in movies like Inception or the aforementioned Venom, he’s also given phenomenal performances in Peaky Blinders and, perhaps more relevant to this piece, the Brian Helgeland-directed biopic Legend. Much like Capone, Legend also focused on notorious criminals in the form of the Kray Brothers, so I’m really looking forward to seeing what Tom Hardy will bring to a part that was last inhabited – outside of a couple of sci-fi shows – by Stephen Graham on Boardwalk Empire. Here’s hoping Trank and Hardy will bring us another great entry in the cinematic gangster canon when Capone comes to video on demand on May 12.
