The Captain America: Brave New World overhaul is a lot more extensive than Marvel wants us to think. While the time frame for the reshoots was given as being four or five months – enough time to film an entire movie – Marvel downplayed it as simply an attempt to punch up the action. Now, Deadline exclusively reports that Matthew Orton has been hired to write some new scenes, which will be filmed in mid-2024. Orton’s few writing credits are Operation Finale, Devil’s Peak, and… Moon Knight. Captain America: Brave New World is being directed by Julius Onah and stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson, as well as Liv Tyler, Tim Blake Nelson, Carl Lumbly, and Harrison Ford. It’s set to release on February 14, 2025.
It’s always one step forward, two steps back for Marvel. They’re reshooting Brave New World after poor test screenings, which is probably a good thing in theory; supposedly, the film is obnoxiously political and hyper-partisan, which fits with the tone of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, from which this movie spawned. But instead of capitalizing on this opportunity (costly though it no doubt is), they’re bringing on a guy from another of their lousy Disney+ shows instead of seeking out a great writer. (That may be unfair; I never saw Operation Finale, and it looked pretty good, but they keep going back to their Disney+ well.) That tells me that this is all for show; they know they’ve got to fix something about Brave New World, but they’re trying to do it cheaply instead of putting some real thought into how to make the film better. At least this indicates that they’re changing a lot more than a few action scenes; they wouldn’t have hired a whole new writer just for that. But they’re going to half-ass this like they do with everything nowadays, and it’s maddening considering the money they throw at their films. Spend a little more on the creatives and less on wherever the hell the bulk of it goes, and maybe you’ll produce something that doesn’t need to be rebuilt from the ground up.
