Christopher Nolan’s next opus is finally on the way. Deadline reports Warner Bros. has set a July 2020 release for the acclaimed director’s next project, which will, of course, be released in IMAX. As is par for the course when it comes to Nolan’s filmography, details are under wraps.
When I read this news, I breathed a sigh of relief. Over the last few months, I had been getting worried that Nolan was no longer sticking to his usual schedule, having not heard anything about his next movie in 2018, so I’m glad my concern was unfounded. Unlike auteurs such as Terrence Malick and James Cameron, Christopher Nolan has always managed to have a new film out every two to three years like clockwork, each building on the last and becoming more and more of an event. When Inception first came out the top brass at Warner Bros., in spite of the film defying description, proclaimed Nolan a brand onto himself. This was made even clearer when they had first announced Dunkirk, the kind of movie that would no doubt be difficult to get made by any other director.
Yet Nolan always has a vision, a vision that filmgoers and critics alike have flocked to since The Dark Knight (and arguably before that, going back to Memento). Ever since the Batman epic that gave us Heath Ledger‘s Joker, the Nolan brand has permeated the depths of pop culture. From a reference in Glee to a character on the iconic ABC soap General Hospital proclaiming they were no Christopher Nolan, the evidence is overwhelming that the industry at large has embraced Nolan, which makes the announcement of his next project all the more exciting. I just hope he gives Michael Caine a bigger role in this film; I’ve started viewing the actor as a highlight of any Nolan project.
