Cobra Kai Season 6 Part 3 Full Trailer is Epic

A whole four days after releasing a minute-long teaser that didn’t do much to get the blood pumping, Netflix has unveiled a full trailer for Cobra Kai Season 6 Part 3, the upcoming final run of episodes for the Karate Kid revival series. These last five episodes, following Part 1 and Part 2 of Season 6, find Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso leading the students of Miyagi-Do in the  Sekai Taikai, the most prestigious karate tournament in the world… which is now being held in the Valley. But they’ll have to overcome a series of enemies, including Cobra Kai, Johnny’s old dojo, which is once again being led by his former sensei, John Kreese; Terry Silver, another former Cobra Kai sensei and Kreese’s old Vietnam buddy; and the Iron Dragons, a formidable dojo with seemingly unstoppable fighters and a brutal sensei. Karate Kid movie holdovers Ralph Macchio, William Zabka, Martin Kove, Yuji Okumoto, and Thomas Ian Griffith return, as do Cobra Kai newbies Mary Mouser, Xolo Maridueña, Tanner Buchanan, Peyton List, and Jacob Bertrand. Cobra Kai Season 6 Part 3 debuts on Netflix on February 13, and you can see the full trailer below:

Okay, that was much better. When I wrote about the teaser a few days ago, I focused on the negative aspects of this final Cobra Kai season, partly because I do think the quality has dipped a bit from the outstanding earlier seasons and partly because the teaser was kind of lame and didn’t really sell this last set of episodes. This is the end of a beloved show; you have to excite people, not show slow, safe practice sessions in a backyard. But the Cobra Kai Season 6 Part 3 trailer is another story; this one is everything it should be, a fun, energetic rallying call to see these characters fight their way to the end of an excellent show. And its effect was to remind me how much I love Cobra Kai and, despite it being time for the show to call it quits, how much I’ll miss it when it’s gone. (Hey, Netflix, how about a 4K home release?) Many of Cobra Kai’s best qualities are on display: the focus on honor and friendship, the notion that good and evil are sometimes a matter of perspective, that there’s good in our enemies and evil in us, the can-do determination of the heroes, the respect for the past as it shapes the future, and the love of the 80s. The flashbacks are used perfectly this time, showing how far everyone has come – and how some have circled back to where they began. (Perhaps that’s the difference between the heroes and villains of Cobra Kai: Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso have learned from their mistakes, while John Kreese and Terry Silver have returned to being the same evil senseis they always were.)

The stuff with the kids is better, too, more focused on the tournament and their inner turmoil than relationships and teen stuff, which has run its course at this point. And the song is absolute perfection; nothing emphasizes the Karate Kid saga coming to a close (aside from that movie on the horizon) like seeing Daniel and the Karate family he helped create – Mr. Miyagi’s legacy – than hearing “You’re the Best.” It works so beautifully because it’s Daniel’s theme from the first film, and it’s the kind of 80s anthem Johnny would love. Speaking of whom, one thing I don’t care for is the lack of Johnny Lawrence; this began as his show even more than Daniel’s, and I don’t want him sidelined. However, I did love seeing him have a moment with Miguel, who also feels a bit diminished. If those two come to the forefront along with Daniel and Samantha (you have no idea how done I am with Hawk and Demetri’s tiff – and Demetri in general), Cobra Kai could end its run on an emotional high. And we need a lot of classic Johnny humor as well.
