In an interview with AlloCiné last Friday, Daisy Ridley discussed her upcoming Star Wars film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Ridley says Rey’s next adventure will take Star Wars in “a new direction.” Read more here, and check out the interview in full on YouTube:
“So I thought about it for a little bit, and once I knew what the story was and everything, I knew it was something I really wanted to do. I think it’s a really fantastic exploration of the Star Wars world. It’s a really cool way of taking the story on in a bit of a different direction.”
Ridley is unsure if the movie will be a standalone story or kick off a new trilogy. She continues, “I know the storyline for one film. That’s not to say that that’s all it is, but that’s what I was told about. And I imagine it will be the next film, I think. I mean, again, I don’t know, post strikes and everything, how quickly everything will start up again. But yes, so far, I know the story of one film and I think people will be very excited.”
This is a bit of a nothing burger, but I don’t blame her. Katee Sackhoff has told us about Lucasfilm’s “badass NDAs,” and I can only imagine the secrecy surrounding Rey’s already-contentious return to cinemas. Nobody wants this, except for Kathleen Kennedy and Ridley (who probably needs the money). I think Daisy Ridley is a fine actress, but Star Wars and the character she played in it shot her career down before it really took off. I don’t expect this film to be good, and I’m not open to more stories in the sequel timeline, anyway. I don’t think they can do anything to make Jake Skywalker palatable, or almost anything that transpired across the three movies. Their perpetual doubling-down on this time period is perplexing, and I think it will prove a financially disastrous choice.
