The Knight has finally come. DC FanDome has debuted the first trailer for Matt Reeves’ The Batman. With only four weeks of filming in the can, this was a welcome surprise. Check out the Batman trailer below:
If I’m being honest, a part of me expected our first full trailer for The Batman was going to be a bit jarring, if only because this was going to be our first look at these actors inhabiting our favorite Gothamites. Yet, from the first shot of Bruce Wayne to the noir aesthetic that permeates the footage, the brief snippet of the Batman voice to even the look of Commissioner Gordon, everything felt pitch-perfect. I had the vaguest sense of déjà vu as Batman tries to figure out the Riddler’s endgame that, for the briefest moment, brought me back to Batman Forever, only this time, the villain’s machinations seem far more menacing, amplified by the fact that we never see him onscreen, only ever hearing his voice (embracing the less is more approach I had been hoping to see from the Snyder Cut trailer). In addition, while we only saw her for the briefest moment, I absolutely loved the look of Catwoman, instantly recalling “Batman: Year One.” However, the biggest moment in my mind came towards the end. It’s almost a cliché for the bad guys to question who or what the Dark Knight is as he begins taking the criminals down. Rather than a simple, “I’m Batman,” Battinson proclaims, “I’m vengeance.” As a huge fan of Batman: The Animated Series, I still remember hearing the words, “I am vengeance! I am the night! I am Batman!” I know that probably would’ve been too much to ask for in the Batman trailer, but at this point, I won’t be surprised if we end up hearing those words in the film. Regardless, this was definitely worth the wait, and I’m grateful Matt Reeves and co. gave us our first look at the next iteration of the Caped Crusader. I can’t wait to see more in the months ahead.

Phenomenal trailer. One of the best I’ve seen, in fact. Nails the tone of Gotham.
Feel like he would of made a better Terry McGinnis than anything. I also don’t want year one again. Regardless, i’m more excited about this batman than i was the Ben Affleck one.
Tone is great; the music ok I can kinda feel it (flashbacks to The Crow and Nirvana in highschool) but Mr. Sparkles over here I’m gonna have to get used to hopefully, or this is gonna be a bumpy ride. Lost Harbor made the observation that this could have been a killer Batman Beyond rendition given a futuristic setting and maybe a hybrid or two. Something to think about if while you’re watching sparkles beat some A$$.
Looks like the noir, grounded detective story that I’ve always wanted to see from a Batman film. Having the Riddler as the villain is a great choice
