DC Releases New Suicide Squad Isekai Anime Trailer

Now that we’ve gotten past the Suicide Squad movies and the Suicide Squad video game, get set for the Suicide Squad anime! Last July, DC announced Suicide Squad Isekai, an anime T.V. show based on the DC Comics characters from Wit Studio and Warner Bros. Japan. Now, they’ve released a trailer for the series, which is directed by Eri Osada, with series composition by Tappei Nagatsuki. The trailer is kind of wacky (well, “kind of”), but it appears to involve Amanda Waller sending the Suicide Squad – including Harley Quinn (as if there were any doubt), Deadshot, King Shark, Peacemaker, and Rick Flag – into a magical world inhabited by what look like werewolves to stop a war. The Joker is also involved. Suicide Squad Isekai will premiere in Japan in July of 2024 on Tokyo MX and BS11 and will stream sometime later this year. You can watch the Suicide Squad Isekai trailer below:

It feels similar to 2016’s Suicide Squad, with the team being sent into a situation that’s not really in their milieu. In that film, they were supposed to fight the Enchantress, with her mystical powers and armies of demonic henchmen; in Suicide Squad Isekai, they’re going to a magical world with monsters and stuff. That feels like a lot to put on Harley Quinn and Deadshot; at that power level, it looks like a job for Superman. Regardless, if you’re into anime and open to off-the-wall uses for established characters (like that old Japanese Spider-Man show where he had a Megazord or something), it looks like it could be fun. I have to admit, I’m getting a little tired of the Suicide Squad; it’s a neat idea that they haven’t executed properly in any of the adaptations so far (except for the Arrowverse, where they made more sense than in the movies). But maybe anime will be the vessel that finally breaks them through; I doubt it, but hopefully, fans of the characters or anime – or both, ideally – will enjoy this.
