DC Series Stargirl Canceled

Chalk up one more DC production, but not because of David Zaslav this time. The DC Arrowverse-adjacent (I think) TV series Stargirl has been canceled; it will run out the rest of its third season, which will end on December 7, 2022. Created by Geoff Johns (who also created the comic book superhero on whom the show is based), Stargirl began on the DC Universe streaming service, with each episode of its first season airing the next day on the CW. Seasons 2 and 3 went right to the CW, as DC Universe was defunct at that point. The decision to cancel Stargirl comes from Nextar Media Group, which acquired the CW earlier this month; according to Deadline, the showrunners were warned that Stargirl would probably be canceled, allowing them to plan ahead. Johns said as much in a statement:

Stargirl has always held a special place in my heart for many reasons… With all the brewing changes at the network, we were aware this was possibly the last season, so we wrote with that in mind and have delivered what I believe to be the best season of Stargirl yet, with complete creative closure. The cast and crew are extraordinary, and I’d like to thank them for helping me bring this series to life. Brec embodied Courtney in every way possible — with grace, strength and humor — exceeding my wildest expectations. I am grateful to WBTV and The CW for giving us a home to tell this story and to honor my beloved late sister, and I’m beyond thankful to the press and fans who have always championed us for three amazing seasons. Most series never get this far. We couldn’t be more proud of our show and the fan community it’s built.”

I never watched Stargirl – despite having a few people suggest it to me – so I’m not all that broken up about its cancelation, but it’s not particularly surprising. Outside of some passionate fans, you never really hear about the show, and with a lot of the Arrowverse series ending and Nextar looking to rebrand the CW, most of the current crop is probably on borrowed time. I’m glad fans will get a proper ending, though; it’s a bummer when a series is left open-ended, so much so that it can dissuade you from trying new things. With the Arrowverse seemingly coming to an end (give or take a couple of shows nobody seems to care much about), I wonder what the new-and-improved CW will look like once Nextar is done remodeling. The emphasis will likely be decidedly less on DC Comics and superheroes, but things like Riverdale and Nancy Drew are also leaving. I guess you can’t blame Nextar for wanting their new network to turn a profit for a change.

Do you watch Stargirl? Are you sad it’s getting canceled? Now that movie multiverses are all the rage, will the Rock be spoiling an appearance from the titular hero in a DCEU film down the road? Let us know in the comments, and stay tuned to Geeks + Gamers for more from the television graveyard!

Yeah, I’m sad about this. Even though it features the younger or lesser known JSA members as youths at its heart it reminds me of John’s JSA where the older members train up the younger generation of heroes. Only in this version instead of Garrick and Scott, the kids only have Starman’s sidekick Stripesy now Stripe to help them learn the ropes. I’m still catching up on Season 3 since I use the app to watch but so far it’s been a good series and was their best until Superman showed up with his show.
