We’re going to have to wait a little longer for that epic mutant fight we’ve been anticipating. Disney has released its quarterly earnings report, which lists the studio’s upcoming movie release schedule. The Marvels, which Disney was rumored to be considering delaying, remains in its (final) previous November 10, 2023 slot, but a big movie is missing: Deadpool 3. Not only has it apparently been delayed, but it’s not on the board at all. The final film with a release date is Inside Out 2 on June 14, 2024, which is just over a month after Deadpool 3’s former opening on May 3, 2024, so the list ends before the Marvel film could reasonably be rescheduled, especially since this is undoubtedly due to the actors’ strike.
I suppose this was inevitable. The Marvels and other films have been completed, so they’re ready to go, even if the actors can’t make the publicity rounds. (Nowadays, I don’t think that’s so important; nobody watches the late night shows anymore – not since they’ve become unbearable political lectures that no longer even attempt to disguise themselves as comedy.) And I don’t think Disney is expecting a whole lot from The Marvels, so delaying it and costing themselves even more money would be foolish. But Deadpool 3 was still been filming when the actors went on strike, and it was forced to halt production; rumors were that it was nearly wrapped, but that doesn’t take into account post-production, reshoots, and the like. And unlike The Marvels, Disney probably has high hopes for this one, and after a string of misfires, they want their next big superhero movie to be as good as it can be for a change. That’s good; I’d rather they not half-ass Deadpool. This also indicates that they expect the strike(s) to go on for a while, so I guess they’re digging their heels in on the actors too. At least they’re not replacing Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman with AI; that’s a good sign.
