Deadpool Accepts Creative Arts Emmy

Deadpool has finally won an award… or, rather, he accepted one on behalf of Ryan Reynolds. Last night, the actor won a Creative Arts Emmy for his documentary series Welcome to Wrexham alongside co-creator Rob McElhenney. The show follows Reynolds and McElhenney after they purchase Wrexham, a Welsh football club; it airs on FX and streams on Hulu in the US and Disney+ in the UK. While the pair did not attend the ceremony, they recorded a video that Reynolds shared on his Twitter account. McElhenney, who is best known as one of the stars and co-creators of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, begins with a very gracious opening, but just as he’s about to start thanking people, he’s interrupted by a certain Merc with a Mouth:

“Cymru am byth” is Welsh and translates to “Wales forever” in English; “bitches” is the same in both languages.

I had no idea Welcome to Wrexham was even a thing, but I don’t really follow sports, so it wasn’t exactly on my radar. But I love seeing Ryan Reynolds – sorry, “Mr. Lively” – turn his win into an opportunity to promote Deadpool 3, or at least promise everyone it’ll be good. This is the best kind of marketing; it’s original, inventive, seemingly spontaneous (I know it had to have been planned, but taking people by surprise goes a long way in terms of appearances), and funny, especially the line about the visual effects on Reynolds’ and Hugh Jackman’s faces deserving an Oscar. Deadpool is uniquely suited to doing something like this as well, since he breaks the fourth wall and is aware of being a fictional character. It will probably be a while till we see footage from Deadpool 3 (aside from whatever leaks come from the set), so in the meantime, gags like this are perfect for tiding people over – and Rob McElhenney is a sport for letting Deadpool hijack his speech.
