Cara Dune’s next adventure is taking shape. A Deadline exclusive reveals some details about the movie Gina Carano is making with The Daily Wire. Based on the novel White Knuckle, the film will feature Carano as an almost-victim of a serial killer who enlists the aid of a trucker to track down her attacker, who also works as a trucker. Eric Red, the novel’s author – who also wrote the screenplays for 80s horror classics The Hitcher and Near Dark – will script the adaptation, which will be a thriller that Deadline calls “in the vein of Duel, Breakdown and True Grit.” No other actors have been cast, but an unnamed director is negotiating to come aboard, and filming is to take place this fall in Tennessee, Utah, and Montana. Dallas Sonnier and Amanda Presmyk of Bone Tomahawk and Dragged Across Concrete, respectively, will produce with the Daily Wire crew, as will Tony Timpone, once the editor of Fangoria. The goal is to release White Knuckle, or whatever they end up calling it, in the first quarter of 2022. Gina Carano, you’ll recall, was appearing on The Mandalorian and was set to headline her own spinoff series until Disney fired her for sharing a social media post suggesting that the Holocaust was bad and shouldn’t happen again.
Okay, I’m going to go out on a limb: based on the producers involved, I think the director they’re talking to is S. Craig Zahler. If so, that’s perfect; Zahler is an excellent filmmaker, and his movies tend to have a right-of-center bent, which is what I imagine The Daily Wire is going for with their productions. I need to watch Bone Tomahawk again, but I really liked Dragged Across Concrete, and Brawl in Cell Block 99 is a flat-out masterpiece. If they’re not talking to Zahler for White Knuckle, they should absolutely try to work with him down the line. Prognosticating aside, I like what we know about this movie so far. It sounds like the type of thriller they used to make in the 80s and 90s that have dropped off the map in more recent years. Comparing it to Breakdown is music to my ears; that’s a film that never gets talked about, but I think it’s one of Kurt Russel’s best. The Daily Wire is taking a big step in shifting the culture by creating their own entertainment; I remember Andrew Klavan mentioning it on an episode of his podcast, which makes me wonder if he’s the one who pitched this idea. And getting Gina Carano to be the face of their pictures is perfect; not only is she entertaining and likable, but she’s become one of the most prominent figures of the cancel culture movement. Perhaps the unlikely team of Cara Dune, Black Widow, and Cruella De Vil will manage to topple Disney, or at least knock it down a few pegs.
