Per Variety, Disney+ closed its July-September quarter with 12.1 million additional subscribers. This far surpassed forecasts of an 8.9 million subscriber growth. Disney’s combined streaming services, namely Disney+, Disney+ Hotstar, Hulu, and ESPN+, exceeded 235 million global subscribers. This is up from 221.1 million total subscribers at last quarter’s end. Disney claims that Andor, Hocus Pocus 2, Ms. Marvel, and She-Hulk were the streaming services’ biggest performers this quarter. This comes ahead of the streamer’s with-ads tier launch next month.
Honestly, I don’t believe them about Ms. Marvel or especially She-Hulk. Andor and Hocus Pocus 2 seem like obvious contenders, even if the latter makes me sad. Ms. Marvel came and went like a fart in the wind, and I don’t know a single person in real life who watched She-Hulk, or anyone online who enjoyed it. Regardless, such a surge in subscriber growth before the cheaper ad tier releases shows people’s eagerness for Disney+. Without the Star Wars shows and IP revivals like Hocus Pocus 2 and the upcoming Disenchanted, I believe this service would sink.
