On Wednesday, September 29th, Disney put out a new trailer for their upcoming animated fantasy adventure Encanto. Set in an enchanted, fictionalized Columbia, this is the story of Mirabel Madrigal (Stephanie Beatriz), the only normal member of her family. The Madrigal home is brimming with magic that grants special abilities to everyone who resides there… except for Mirabel. However, when their house and the magic within are threatened, Mirabel may be the only one who can intervene. With songs and a score from Lin-Manuel Miranda and veteran Disney directors Jared Bush (Zootopia) and Byron Howard (Tangled, Zootopia) on board, the film comes out on November 24th. Take a look at the new clip here:
I think this trailer looks great. The animation is just gorgeous; the plants, the house, all the bright colors. It’s just stunning. However, Raya and the Last Dragon had incredible animation. Visuals alone are not enough to carry a movie. I don’t have any strong feelings about the basic storyline so far. Whereas Raya had what sounded like a great story but failed to deliver, Encanto is selling itself more on its music and visuals. I just hope Encanto doesn’t turn out to be another movie that boils down to “Be yourself,” the most tired, overused message in animated movies like this. It’s fine if Mirabel’s lack of powers proves to be a strength, and I’m fairly sure that’s exactly how it’ll play out. I just hope the movie has more going on than that.
Aside from the fact that I watch every animated Disney movie, the main draw I see with Encanto is its soundtrack. We’ve only heard bits and pieces in the promos, but come on. It’s Lin-Manuel Miranda, the mind behind Disney’s best musical of the last ten years. I also think they have promising directors attached; Byron Howard worked on several of my favorite recent Disney films. Overall, I’m cautiously looking forward to seeing Encanto this holiday season.
