Deadline reports that Sarah Polley is in talks to direct a live-action remake of Bambi for Disney. Polley is known for writing Women Talking (for which she won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar), Take This Waltz, and Away From Her. The remake is said to feature music from Kacey Musgraves Bambi is an unsurprising addition to a long line of remade Disney classics. The screenplay was written by two Transparent writers, Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster; a previous version was written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Lindsey Beer.
I try not to judge too harshly, especially when we don’t have much information or even a trailer. But I have to be honest: this is straight-up not a good idea. I don’t want the expressive, cute characters of Bambi replaced with creepy, “photorealistic” but dead-eyed CGI puppets. The artistry of scenes like the buck fight and the forest burning are almost certain to be lost among a gray haze over the film. Faline will undoubtedly be a girl boss who isn’t ready to rule the forest with Bambi, and the Great Prince will be portrayed as a loser, deadbeat dad. There’s just nothing about a modern, live-action remake of Bambi that sounds appealing to me.
