The sandworms are jumping because Warner Bros. has released a trailer and poster for Dune: Part Two. Based on the second half of Frank Herbert’s landmark science fiction novel, Dune: Part Two continues the story of Paul Atreides as he seeks revenge on his family’s enemies while uniting various tribes on the desert planet of Arrakis, colloquially called “Dune.” Denis Villeneuve returns to direct Dune: Part Two, with actors Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Javier Bardem, and Dave Bautista also back. They’re joined by Florence Pugh, Léa Seydoux, Austin Butler, and Christopher Walken. Dune: Part Two will be released in theaters on November 3, 2023, and you can see the trailer and poster below:
The trailer is mostly about visuals, which makes sense because Dune looked spectacular, and I’m sure Part Two will as well. It reveals little about the plot; a romance between Paul and Chani is developing, the Fremen are beginning to see Paul as the messianic figure he was hinted at being in the first one, and while his mother cautions him against revenge, it’s clear he disagrees and wants blood for what happened to his family. And the preparations Javier Bardem is putting him through are, I assume, for the famous sandworm scene. That’s it, and I’m glad because I don’t want to know much about the movie. I liked the first one a lot, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of this world and the characters stuck in it. (Paul describing swimming and huge bodies of water to Chani, who’s only ever known the vast deserts of Arrakis, is great; it reinforces how depressing it must be to live there and the hope Paul symbolizes to its people.) I’m really excited to see Christopher Walken in a movie like this, especially since he’s a villain. This is high on the list of movies I’m looking forward to seeing this year.
