FromSoftware is bringing gamers even more pain, but it sure is beautiful. Today, the developer of the popular soulslike RPG Elden Ring and the game’s distributor, Bandai Namco, released a trailer for the upcoming Elden Ring DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree. This is a story trailer, so it doesn’t show off any gameplay – just some gorgeous cinematics. Elden Ring was a huge success upon release, noted for its difficult gameplay and open-world environment, so more content was inevitable, but it looks like FromSoftware put a lot of thought into their offering. Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree will be available on June 21, 2024, and you can see the new trailer below:
That looks spectacular. I know this is just cinematics, but you have to marvel at the visuals in that trailer; it looks like they’re advertising the next Lord of the Rings movie. That monster that shows up at 1:19, in particular, looks like it’s about to jump out of the screen and swallow you whole. I haven’t played Elden Ring yet (I’ve only recently played my first soulslike, or Soulsborne, or whatever, Bloodborne, which I loved), but this makes me want to immediately buy it. You look at those demonic armies and scorched landscapes and want to liberate a fantasy world from evil. Aside from showing off gameplay, that’s how you sell a video game – the visceral feel imagery like this elicits. Reactions from Elden Ring fans seem to be positive, so unless the actual DLC is a dud (and for $39.99, it had better not be), it looks like Shadow of the Erdtree will be another hit for FromSoftware and Bandai Namco.
I like things that borrow heavily but slightly. LOTR is an influence and also, HomeTree from Shannara Chronicles.
