The marketing campaign for the next Fast and Furious movie is trying to shoulder its way past 2023’s other blockbusters. Empire has a short interview with Louis Leterrier, the director of Fast X, that’s broken up into two articles, as well as some exclusive images featuring Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto and the new characters played by Jason Momoa and Brie Larson. You can see them below, along with some quotes from Leterrier, courtesy of Empire:
“There’s a war brewing… It’s coming to an end, and it is a race to the finish. There will be some tremendous casualties… People are going to need to take sides… Alliances will need to be made. Good guys will become bad guys, bad guys will become good guys.”
“He’s an incredible new character… It’s 1,000 per cent Momoa.”
“When you have fought so hard to keep your faith and protect your family, and literally change the world, which is the case of Dom Toretto, there is a price to pay… His enemies are coming after him. There’s a total sum of enemies that are coming after him.”
It sounds fine if you like these movies. I’m not a Fast and Furious fan; I watched a bunch of them to catch up so I could see the ones featuring Jason Statham, and I don’t feel the need to watch them again. Jason Momoa playing a villain is good in terms of creating a physical match for Vin Diesel, but as these articles note, he’ll probably be part of the “family” by the end of the film. Leterrier is keeping Brie Larson’s role a bit mysterious, but she sounds like a villain, or at least an opposing faction of this “war” Leterrier is teasing. Leterrier also says there will also be “tremendous casualties,” which I imagine even hardcore fans of the franchise will have to see to believe, especially now that Sung Kang’s Han is back from the dead. Fast X is coming to theaters on May 19, 2023, which is a good position for it to be in: two weeks after Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3 and two weeks before Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. If audiences take to it, it could carve out a nice profit for itself, and it doesn’t seem like Fast fans are getting tired of the series anytime soon.
Thanks again to Empire for the pics!
