What John Wick is doing at the theater, Tyler Rake is about to do for streaming. Netflix has released a trailer for Extraction 2, the sequel to their hit action movie from 2020. Little is known about the plot of Extraction 2 other than it features Tyler Rake once again rescuing someone from a dangerous situation, resulting in a lot of dead bad guys on the screen and rejuvenated testosterone in the audience. Chris Hemsworth returns as Rake, as do Golshifteh Farahani and Adam Bessa as his fellow mercenaries; they’re joined by Daniel Bernhardt, Susan Phelps, and Tintain Dalakishvili. Sam Hargrave is back to direct Extraction 2, with Joe Russo writing the script and producing with his brother Anthony Russo and their production company, AGBO. Extraction 2 will arrive on Netflix on June 16, 2023, and you can see the new trailer below:
This is my reward for sitting through the Blue Beetle trailer. I loved the first Extraction, and this sequel looks fantastic. Based on the trailer, it appears Tyler Rake is sent to rescue a young woman this time – from a prison! I love how the focus is on one scene, but that’s more than enough to show us the kind of action Hargrave has in store for us. Of course, there’s a massive prison riot, so Rake has to beat his way through an army of hardened criminals. It’s got him doing the amazing things the action heroes of old once did, like tanking a brick to the back of the head and beating up bad guys with his arm on fire. Hemsworth is great in this role, making you believe Tyler Rake can do fantastic feats of action-hero strength the way the greats used to do it. He deserves to be a big star, and as much as I’d like to see him play lots of different characters across various genres, I also want him to play Rake every few years or so.
It had already been confirmed before the new trailer, but I’m glad Extraction 2 is a sequel instead of a prequel, as was rumored to be a possibility. I’ve been hesitant to talk about it in detail so as not to ruin Extraction for anyone who hasn’t seen it, but since they tell you what happens in the trailer, I’ll discuss it: Rake dying at the end of Extraction would have ruined his arc. That movie was about a man who’d lost his desire to live rediscovering it through his interactions with the little boy he was hired to rescue. You don’t kill a character like that because it renders everything he’s just gone through meaningless. Having him survive what looked like certain death, on the other hand, could enhance an already great movie; his newfound lease on life gave him the strength to beat the Grim Reaper into a bloody paste and claw his way back to the land of the living. I love that, and I also like how he now has to deal with post-traumatic stress disorder (or something akin to it), with the brick triggering memories of his bout with death – a bout he won because Tyler Rake rules. I’m looking forward to this more than pretty much anything coming out in theaters, and I’m not joking. It feels like action movies are back, and thank God for that.
Hard to say, because I’m looking forward to them for different reasons. That’s why I don’t have a favorite movie; I love too many for different reasons, and I don’t like the idea of validating one over the other. I’m excited for both, though; Nolan’s films are some of the few that still feel like events.
I am so excited! I LOVED the first movie and I agree that it is great this is a sequel. That said, I wouldn’t mind if we got a prequel also! If sequel is good, Extraction could expand into more stories! Do you even look forward to it more than Oppenheimer?
