Ferrari Trailer is in to Win

Another racing movie is speeding towards movie screens as Neon has released the first trailer for Michael Mann’s Ferrari. Based on the book Enzo Ferrari: The Man and the Machine about the life of Enzo Ferrari, the man behind the Ferrari car manufacturer, Ferrari is a passion project for Mann, who directs from a script by Troy Kennedy Martin. Adam Driver stars as Enzo Ferrari, and he’s joined by Penélope Cruz, Shailene Woodley, Gabriel Leon, Patrick Dempsey, Sarah Gadon, and Jack O’Connell. After debuting at the Venice International Film Festival, Ferrari will arrive in theaters on Christmas Day. You can see the trailer below:

Technically, this is a teaser for Ferrari, not a “trailer,” but it’s the kind of trailer I like most. It tells you everything you need to know about the film and doesn’t give much away. The shots of the car racing look fantastic, better than the recent Gran Turismo (which wasn’t a bad movie, but the racing scenes were underwhelming). A movie about Enzo Ferrari calls to mind Ford v Ferrari, James Mangold’s recent racing film, which featured the legendary car maker in a supporting role played by Remo Girone. (He also featured in Ron Howard’s Rush, where he was played by Augusto Dallara.) Interestingly, Christian Bale, who starred in Ford v Ferrari, was once going to star in Ferrari, but dropped out; Hugh Jackman was in talks after that but left after the film stalled for two years. Now, it’s happening with Adam Driver, and while we obviously don’t see much of his performance in the Ferrari trailer, the clip of him saying, “If you get into one of my cars, you get in to win,” suggests a severe performance. I’m eager to see Ferrari once it releases (though I’ll be a little busy on opening day).
