The Gray Man has finally given us some color, as Netflix has released images from its upcoming spy action film. Adapted from the novel by Mark Greaney, The Gray Man features Ryan Gosling as Court Gentry, a former CIA assassin who finds himself a target of his former employers, with Chris Evans as Lloyd Hanson, a fellow agency hitman who is now hunting Gentry. Direct by Joe and Anthony Russo of Marvel fame, The Gray Man also stars Ana de Armas, Billy Bob Thornton, Alfre Woodard, Jessica Henwick, Regé-Jean Page, and Wagner Moura. The Gray Man will open in select theaters on July 15, 2022, before hitting Netflix a week later on July 22. Check out the new images from The Gray Man below:
I see guns, I see action, I see actors I like, and I’m happy. The Gray Man sounds like my kind of movie, and, having not read any of Mark Greaney’s books, I’m ready to be wowed. This is Netflix’s most costly production yet, with a $200 million budget; hopefully, once the big-name salaries are taken care of, that leaves a lot of room for some cool action set pieces. I like the way the actors look in their roles, too. I may be imagining it, but Ryan Gosling looks more weathered than his usual pretty-boy image; it reminds me of my uncle once saying of traditionally handsome actors cast in tough-guy roles, “They’re gonna have to dirty him up a little.” Gosling looks dirtier than usual here, like a real man of action. I also like the contrast between his and Chris Evans’ facial hair; Evans has a cop mustache while Gosling is sporting a more roguish goatee, indicating their respective statuses with the establishment. Ana de Armas’ jacket is… a thing that exists, I guess; I imagine she’s undercover, though who she’d possibly be blending in with, I have no idea. I don’t know who Regé-Jean Page is playing (or, if I’m being honest, who he is), but from his attire, I’d guess a Company man. Everything looks good so far, and while I’m sure we’ll see a trailer sooner or later, I don’t need one; The Gray Man has me sold.
