Scooby-Doo takes us back to where it all began in the first trailer for the upcoming Warner Animation Group film, Scoob! The Scoob! trailer opens on a meta moment with Shaggy and Scooby getting ready for their new movie, Scooby briefly narrates the trailer, telling us to prepare for “the epic origin story of the greatest team of heroes in the history of mystery.” Then we see Shaggy and Scooby meet for the first time, which also leads to a delineation of how the famous Great Dane got his name. After a moment of the two of them meeting the rest of the gang just as they experience their first supernatural encounter together, we join an older Scooby and Shaggy as they are transported to the Falcon Fury (which Scooby mistakes for an IKEA). The trailer ends on Fred, Daphne, and Velma searching for their wayward companions. Check out the Scoob! trailer below:
While a movie about the early days of Mystery Inc. may seem like overkill to certain fans – especially those who have seen the 2010 series the 2009 live-action film Scooby-Doo!: The Mystery Begins or the 2010 series Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated – judging by this Scoob! trailer, it appears to work really well. There’s a lot of moments here that, at turns, veer from the surprisingly heartfelt to the hilarious. In addition, the origin story angle positions the movie to kick-start the Hanna-Barbera cinematic universe, for which Warner Bros. is planning (start hiding the picnic baskets from Yogi now). However, that doesn’t mean I’m not sour over Matthew Lillard’s absence from the voice cast as Shaggy. This had been my biggest gripe with the film since Will Forte’s casting as our favorite hippie. Despite my misgivings, Forte’s vocal performance seems to work here, so hopefully, that will extend beyond this trailer when Scoob! debuts in May 2020.
