Martin Scorsese and Netflix have made Mafia movie fans an offer they can’t refuse as the first teaser for the long-awaited film The Irishman has been released. While on the surface, the trailer might not seem like something to write home about, it can’t be said enough how important this movie is. Not only are we getting an on-screen reunion from Hollywood heavyweights Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro, but we also are going to get to see Joe Pesci in his cinematic return, his last film appearances being in DeNiro’s 2006 film The Good Shepherd and the 2010 Taylor Hackford drama Love Ranch. Check out the teaser for The Irishman below…
I have been following The Irishman since its inception, and I had often wondered whether the project would get off the ground, particularly when all the studios seemed to be turning up their nose at it, something I didn’t understand at first glance. Backed by a team that has given us Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, and Goodfellas (and, independently of Scorsese, the Godfather films featuring Pacino and DeNiro), it should’ve been a slam dunk. But when you consider how the comic book film genre has taken over the movie industry, and Scorsese’s desire to use de-aging technology on DeNiro for a significant portion of the film, it, unfortunately, becomes clear why it was so hard to push The Irishman to the screen, particularly regarding Scorsese’s de-aging ambitions. Movies like Tron: Legacy, X-Men: The Last Stand and Ant-Man have all used this still-emerging technology to varying degrees of success, with the latter arguably having the best. Yet while the majority of films only utilize de-aging for a couple of scenes, Scorsese wants to take to it to the next level. Luckily Netflix, always ready to take big swings, will throw their support behind him. I can’t wait to see what these auspices will bring us.
