As far as surprises go, this isn’t one. Speaking with Variety, Josh Hutcherson, the star of the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie, confirmed that a sequel is in the works. According to Hutcherson, the creators of the wildly successful video game adaptation are “in the process right now of nailing down the story” for a second outing, and that “they want to get going as soon as possible.” “They” presumably refers to Blumhouse, the studio behind Five Nights at Freddy’s; the first film was co-written by the video game’s creator, Scott Cawthon. Five Nights at Freddy’s is a horror movie that takes place at an abandoned children’s entertainment venue similar to Chuck E. Cheese, where the animatronic characters come to life and try to kill everyone in sight. Directed by Emma Tammi, Five Nights at Freddy’s also starred Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, and Matthew Lillard.
A sequel to Five Nights at Freddy’s is a no-brainer; the movie cost $20 million to make and grossed $295.3 million worldwide. Even considering other costs – marketing, distribution, what have you – that’s a massive profit, one that puts plenty of 2023’s tent pole releases to shame. I don’t know much about the games, but there are several, so I’m sure cooking up a sequel shouldn’t be a problem. And based on the reactions of the mostly pre-teen audience at my screening, it’ll be welcomed with open arms by the fanbase. I didn’t like Five Nights at Freddy’s, but lots of people did… including Jennifer Lawrence, as Hutcherson told Variety she congratulated him on the film’s opening weekend success. While his little horror flick was cleaning up in theaters, Hutcherson’s former Hunger Games co-star had the number one streaming movie that weekend with No Hard Feelings (which is a much better movie). I guess Katniss will be first in line to support her friend when the inevitable Five Nights at Freddy’s sequel hits theaters.
