Gal Gadot Not Back as Wonder Woman After All?

It looks like the Lasso of Truth may have to stay rolled up – although situations like this make you wish it were real. Variety is exclusively reporting that, despite Gal Gadot’s recent claims, Wonder Woman 3 is not in the works with her reprising the lead role. According to “sources with knowledge of the situation,” James Gunn and Peter Safran have no plans for a Wonder Woman movie or show outside of Paradise Lost, a prequel series about Themyscira to air on HBO. They also address recent comments Gadot made in an article for Flaunt magazine, in which she refers to a specific meeting that came with assurances:

“I was invited to a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran [co-chairperson and CEO of DC alongside Gunn] and what they told me, and I’m quoting: ‘You’re in the best hands. We’re going to develop Wonder Woman 3 with you. [We] love you as Wonder Woman— you’ve got nothing to worry about.’ So time will tell.”

Variety’s sources tell them this isn’t true, that there was no “definitive discussion” and no “promises made” to Gadot about returning to play Wonder Woman. Gunn and Safran have yet to comment on the situation, and Variety says that Gadot’s representative hasn’t yet replied to their request for a comment.

This is another weird situation, not just because nobody knows what’s going on – that seems to be the norm with the developing DCU – but because neither of the two people who can give a definitive answer has done so. Gal Gadot saying Gunn and Safran told her that she would be in another Wonder Woman movie is a direct statement that can be easily refuted by the other two people in the room if it’s not true. Henry Cavill walked out of a meeting with them knowing he was out as Superman (after being told he was in by Warner Bros.), and the Rock knew his plans for Black Adam were up in smoke. So either Gadot completely misunderstood her meeting, she’s lying about it, or something else is going on. I suspect this could be contract negotiations; with the actors on strike, no deals can be made, so perhaps both sides are playing what cards they can. Gadot is getting her fans hyped to see her back as Wonder Woman (or was before the strike when she was allowed to say things beyond picket-line chants), while Warner Bros. is telling people it’s nowhere near a done deal, and Gunn and Safran are staying out of it. So, as per usual, nobody knows nothin’.
