Gina Carano Sues Disney and Lucasfilm

Disney and Lucasfilm are about to learn that a fight isn’t over till both sides say it is. In a Twitter – now X – post, Gina Carano announced that she is suing the studios for discrimination and wrongful termination. As she explains, this is a result of X CEO Elon Musk’s offer to arrange legal representation for anyone who was fired for “exercising their right to free speech” on his platform. Carano commented that she believed she would qualify, and though she admits she thought little of it, a lawyer hired by X contacted her and, after reviewing her evidence, decided she has a case. Now, it’s on, and Disney and Lucasfilm are about to be served. Carano had a role on the Star Wars series The Mandalorian and was going to lead her own spin-off show when she was fired, with Disney and Lucasfilm claiming it was because of a post she made on Instagram, which they deemed anti-Semitic. Carano has maintained that this was an excuse and they’ve wanted to get rid of her since she made a post on then-Twitter jokingly announcing that her pronouns were “beep, bop, boop” and questioned some of the COVID measures taken by the government and private companies. I wasn’t expecting to hear this, but I’m glad I did. Does anyone believe Disney and Lucasfilm think Gina Carano is an anti-Semite or that what she posted – or, to be more accurate, shared – was a derogatory statement against Jewish people? Or is it more likely that she’s right, and they didn’t like her asking inconvenient questions and not towing the company line on the pronoun nonsense? She’s described that degrading struggle session they wanted her to take part in (which she refused, as any sane person would), so it’s hard to believe they saw her make a post about how the Holocaust was a bad thing that shouldn’t happen again and suddenly decided she hated Jewish people. I’m rooting for her, but I also hope this is just the beginning, and I don’t mean for Disney and Lucasfilm. A lot of people had their lives destroyed over trying to maintain their freedoms during the ridiculous lockdowns and COVID regulations, and I’m sick and tired of seeing the monsters who destroyed lives over that travesty shrug their shoulders and skip away like nothing happened without so much as an apology. That goes for the other aspects of Carano’s claim, too; I’m sure she’s not the only one who lost her job over the pronoun insanity or a similar situation where someone wouldn’t silence themselves because they had an unapproved opinion. And, perhaps most of all, Elon Musk deserves a mountain of credit for spending money to stand up for his – and what are supposed to be America’s –principles. Sure, this is good advertising for X as a place that will defend your right to free speech, but I do get the sense that he honestly believes in those rights and wants to make the country a better place. 2024 is off to an interesting start.
