Godzilla x Kong Poster is Out for Blood

Worlds are about to collide again, and Legendary wants you to get hyped. Today, the studio released a poster for their upcoming monster mash sequel Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. A direct sequel to 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong and the next installment in Legendary’s Monsterverse, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has been vague on plot details, but it seems to be about Godzilla and King Kong teaming up to fight a new enemy. Adam Wingard, the director of Godzilla vs. Kong, returns for the sequel, with Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Kaylee Hottle, and Fala Chen starring. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will hit theaters on April 11, 2024, and you can see the poster below:

It’s a pretty neat poster. When I first saw it, I thought it was for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, mostly because I forgot about this movie. But it’s striking in its minimalism, and I like that they’re playing up the film’s villain. From what little we’ve seen, I think he’s some kind of amalgam of Godzilla and King Kong, or at least of their species. That’s a cool idea, something that would necessitate the two icons teaming up once again. His face in a blood smear is effective; this is a real threat, something that’s going to give the heroes a run for their money. I’m slightly hopeful for this one; while it’s nothing I would call great (or even particularly good), I enjoyed Godzilla vs. Kong more than any of the other Monsterverse films because it was actually fun and delivered on the promise of a monster movie. I’m glad Adam Wingard is back (sort of; ideally, he’d be making his own movies, but at least this one will probably be entertaining), and he’s bringing Simon Barrett, who wrote the excellent You’re Next and The Guest, with him. Supposedly, a trailer for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will arrive this weekend; I’m looking forward to getting a taste of what this one has to offer.
