Yes, that title is correct; a very rare copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (or Sorcerer’s Stone here in the USA) has sold for 8,000 GBP, or $9,711.76 (as of December 19th, 2022).
This edition is quite rare because it was never released to the public and was signed by the Wizarding World creator, J.K. Rowling! This rare Bloomsbury edition was created back in 2012 for a competition marking the fifteenth anniversary of the first novel that asked fans to write a letter explaining why they loved the series. Only fifteen copies were released.
Chloe Esslemont, age 16 at the time of the competition, decided to auction her copy off as “the money would be useful now.” The auction included the book (that also contained a dedication to her), along with the original entry that was created in the shape of the Marauder’s Map.
Do you collect books? Would you ever pay that much for a book? No, I don’t have this edition. It’s quite depressing.
Thanks to Hansons Auctioneers for the images!
