This morning, on Warner Bros. Discovery’s fourth-quarter earnings call (via Deadline), CEO David Zaslav confirmed that the previously-announced Harry Potter TV show is coming in 2026. Previously, the series based on J.K. Rowling’s series of fantasy novels had a 2025-2026 release window. Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO & Max Content says the show “will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years,” adding that it will be “a faithful adaptation.” Here’s a statement from Zaslav at the earnings call:
“We’ve not been shy about our excitement around Harry Potter,” Zaslav told Wall Street analysts on the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call. “I was in London a few weeks ago with Casey [Bloys, CEO of HBO] and Channing [Dungey, chairperson of Warner Bros Television] and we spent some real time with JK and her team,” he enthused. “Both sides just thrilled to be reigniting this franchise. Our conversations were great.”
I don’t know what to make of this show. The Harry Potter film adaptations were and remain some of the most influential and iconic movies of my generation. I know everything seemingly gets remade at some point, but what purpose will be served in redoing these? Warner Bros. Discovery will bring in more money, and a TV show has more time to focus on the details, and the movies aren’t perfect translations, especially The Prisoner of Azkaban. (I’ll never understand why that movie is so beloved.) Anyway, though, I don’t think they can improve on the overall quality and popularity of that series. I’ll probably watch this, but I just don’t see it going over well.
But what do you think? Are you looking forward to seeing a Harry Potter TV show? Let us know in the comments!
