It looks like Henry Golding is going from crazy rich to a ninja commando. The Hollywood Reporter reports that the rising Hollywood star is in talks to portray the iconic GI Joe character Snake Eyes in a spinoff movie based on Hasbro’s 80s toy line. The film, which will be directed by RIPD and Red director Rob Schwentke, is set to be released in the fall of 2020 from a script by The Huntsman: Winter’s War co-writer Evan Spiliotopoulos. The plot is said to center around Snake Eyes’ quest to find his father’s murderer, joining a ninja clan and soon finding acceptance with them. When the deal goes through, Golding will succeed Stars Wars alum Ray Park in the role, who has inhabited our sword-wielding hero in the previous installments of the GI Joe franchise.
While I’m slightly disappointed that Park’s time in the role has come to an end, I am thrilled to know that his successor is one of my favorite actors working today. To see Golding receive an opportunity to lead a big tent pole movie like this is incredibly exciting and well-deserved. I can’t wait to see one of the more interesting actors out there leave his mark on a fan-favorite character like Snake Eyes. Golding will next be seen with the former Mother of Dragons, Emilia Clarke, in the Paul Feig-directed romantic comedy Last Christmas, and will be appearing in Guy Ritchie’s upcoming gangster pic The Gentleman, which is set for release in January of 2020.
Are you excited that Henry Golding will be playing Snake Eyes or would you rather see Ray Park continue on in the role? Are you looking forward to Golding’s upcoming movies?
