HBO is hoping people will want to a return to Westeros because they’ve released the first House of the Dragon trailer. A prequel to the enormously popular – and nearly universally disappointing – Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon takes place 200 years before the series and depicts the history of the once-mighty House Targaryen, culminating in the Dance of the Dragons, a Targaryen civil war. Based on Fire & Blood, a book George R.R. Martin wrote instead of finishing his long-gestating A Song of Ice and Fire series which begat Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon stars Paddy Considine, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith, and Rhys Ifans. It will premiere on HBO in 2022. Check out the House of the Dragon trailer below:
The House of the Dragon trailer illustrates the catch-22 HBO finds itself in with this series. It’s a prequel to Game of Thrones, so they’re relying heavily on callbacks to that show: the Iron Throne, the Hand pin, the phrase “Fire and Blood,” the promise of dragons. But what should be a slam dunk for them is more of an uphill battle than I’m sure they expected a couple of years ago because most people are mighty unhappy with the way Game of Thrones ended. And this isn’t just “I wanted him to end up with her” matters of personal taste; this is stuff that renders much of the previous seasons worthless. It wasn’t really HBO’s fault; they were ready to give the series as much time and money as it needed to tell its story. But they’re left holding the bag for David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who demolished an enormous amount of goodwill because they couldn’t wait to move on and were too vain to let someone else take over the show for them. Now, HBO has to convince people not only that House of the Dragon will be better but that they should care about a prequel set hundreds of years ago, the outcome of which we already know. Moreover, this series will only lead to a story that disappointed most. Their best bet is to shout the names of the new showrunners – Martin himself (good luck getting those last two books out of him now) and Ryan J. Condal – as loudly and often as they can, but regardless, I don’t see this one becoming anywhere near the sensation Game of Thrones was.

It’s just hard for me to care about it. It’s a story that doesn’t feel like it needs to be told, and we know where it all ends up. This is probably the test to see if the franchise has any life left in it anymore, now that they’ve dropped the rest of the spinoffs they were developing.
I hated the ending of Game of Thrones but honestly, I will give House of Dragon a chance. It’s a seperate show plus I can’t let a crappy ending keep ruining things for me. Which is why, I will still watch that show; unlike GOT, it’s a complete story.
