Rumors of Disney and Marvel’s “pivot” were greatly exaggerated. In an exclusive interview with Agents of Fandom, Brad Winderbaum – Marvel’s Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation – talked about two upcoming series, Wonder Man and Ironheart. Winderbaum confirmed that both shows are going to be released at some point, though he didn’t specify when, and said that they’re currently being edited. Last September, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that they were both removed from the Disney+ release schedule, causing many to wonder if they were being scrapped. (To be fair, Daredevil: Born Again was also removed, so it could have been that Marvel and Disney were figuring out when to release them.) Complementing this idea was Joanna Robinson, the co-author of MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, saying that Marvel was “trashing the Wonder Man project” and that other productions would follow. Here’s what Winderbaum had to say:
“Yeah, absolutely. We’re editing both of those shows as we speak. They’re spectacular, they’re amazing, and they’re different…We’re able to explore corners of the universe that are really exciting. Riri Williams is one of them and I cannot wait for people to meet Simon Williams.”
I can feel the anticipation raging in the hearts of Marvel fans everywhere. I know every character has their fans, but I don’t see a lot of people screaming for Ironheart, and I don’t think most even remember that Wonder Man is supposed to happen. The latter has had production difficulties, including the tragic death of a rigger on the set, and it made sense that Marvel would just cash in its chips and call it a day. But apparently not, and Wonder Man will find its way to Disney+ at some point. Ironheart is a little different because that series was completed some time ago and left sitting on the shelf. Now, Winderbaum says it’s being edited, which makes me think they may be tinkering with it to make it more palatable to the mass audience that’s been rejecting Marvel’s more obnoxious characters. (I wonder if they’re cutting the drag queen storyline.) Admittedly, this is a little different from the rumor that sequels to The Marvels, Eternals, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania were canceled because those were just at the conceptual stages, if that. But I don’t think it’s a good sign that they’re coming our way, either.
This will excite the 5’s of fans already excited for them!
Sursly, Ironheart before Ironlad is shite. And a race swapped Wonder Man isnt exciting, because it’s probably not made for me until it comes out and then the narrative is that I’m just a racist.
