While I doubt anyone thought we had, we’ve now got a huge indication that we haven’t seen the last of Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In a Variety article about actress Elizabeth Olsen, both she and Kevin Feige are asked about Wanda Maximoff’s potential future in the MCU after her apparent demise at the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Actress and producer both seem like they know something they can’t talk about, with Feige all but confirming her return.
When asked about Wanda, Feige said:
“There really is so much more to explore… We still haven’t touched on many of her core storylines from the comics.”
Then, when questioned about her “death” in Multiverse of Madness:
“I don’t know that we saw her under rubble?… I saw a tower coming down, and a little red flash. I don’t know what that means.”
As for Olsen, she actually asked Variety what Feige had told them about Wanda.
“It’s good for me to know how he communicates about it… Because I really, genuinely feel like my job is to keep my mouth shut until he makes an announcement of any kind.”
While admitting that she hopes for “some sort of redemption arc” for Wanda, she says:
“I really don’t know my future… There’s nothing that has been agreed on.”
This sounds like confirmation to me, especially because Olsen wants to know what Feige said before she reveals anything. How could she slip up unless there was something to let slip? Not that any of this should come as a surprise; the way she exited Multiverse of Madness effectively guaranteed she’d return, with no body and that flash of hex magic. It reminded me of the end of “House of M,” where she disappeared, only to reemerge disguised as a common woman. If they go for a redemption arc, which I think is almost certain, I hope they really make her earn it rather than just having her say a few quick words and be back in everyone’s good graces. I appreciated that Multiverse of Madness acted as a kind of wake-up call to everyone who’d been coddling and apologizing for Wanda; they helped create the monster she became. The ending wimped out instead of taking that to its proper conclusion, but if they’re going to bring her back, they need to do it right, or they’ll throw away the years of work they put into developing Wanda.
