James Gunn Shows Up in Harley Quinn Season 3 Trailer

Get ready for a bunch of “Girlboss” articles to flood the internet. HBO has released a trailer for season 3 of their animated comic book series Harley Quinn. Based on the Batman villain (though not anymore, I guess) created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm on Batman: The Animated Series, Harley Quinn explores the titular adorable psychopath after she’s left the Joker and hooked up with Poison Ivy. Harley Quinn is a comedy more than a serious take on the character (Diedrich Bader plays Batman, if that’s any indication), albeit a dark comedy with plenty of murder, mayhem, and sex. Kaley Cuoco plays Harley, with Lake Bell as Poison Ivy, Ron Funches as King Shark, and Alan Tudyk as the Joker. The new season will arrive on HBO Max on July 28, 2022. I know people love this series, but it’s not for me. I barely made it through the first episode; the humor is outlandish and unfunny, and the violence is so goofy it doesn’t shock or amuse. It’s one of those shows/movies that disguise childishness with a lot of cursing and sexual references so it looks adult; ultimately, it’s more a parody of Harley and all things Batman than anything else. That’s fine; it just falls flat for me. But the season 3 trailer is getting a lot of attention, and not just for the show itself; James Gunn, director of The Suicide Squad – which features several characters from the series, including Harley herself – makes an appearance in animated form. It’s cool that the DC Universe can have these kinds of crossovers and references, and James Gunn showing up is appropriate because the tone of this show isn’t that far off from that of The Suicide Squad (which I didn’t like either). I wouldn’t be surprised if they finagle a guest appearance from John Cena as Peacemaker, if only for the cross-promotional opportunity.

What did you think of the Harley Quinn season 3 trailer? Do you enjoy the show? Is a licensing agreement with a sex shop for Clayface chairs in HBO’s future? Let us know in the comments, and stay tuned to Geeks + Gamer for more DC decadence!
