Here’s something you probably didn’t expect to hear today. A Hollywood Reporter exclusive says that Jamie Foxx will return as Spider-Man villain Electro in the next Spidey movie set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Foxx previously played the character in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the film that led to Spider-Man rights holder Sony agreeing to share Marvel’s flagship hero with Disney. Foxx’s Electro is said to be entering the MCU as a result of the establishment of the multiverse in the Marvel mega-franchise, which will be fully explored in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Marvel’s third Spider-Man movie is currently set to release on December 17, 2021.
To quote (a bastardized version of) another Marvel hero, “These are confusing times.” I get that Marvel wants to go the multiverse route in the future, but bringing back Jaime Foxx’s Electro seems like a weird way to kick off that element. I didn’t see The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – its predecessor was the movie that convinced me to stop rewarding studios that make terrible films in the hopes that the next one will be better – but my understanding is that it isn’t very popular. I mean, look at the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and compare it with those of Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home. Why would you want to use the villain from the movie that led to a Spider-Man franchise reboot in that very reboot? I don’t understand why they’d even want to get into the Amazing Spider-Man films. At best, it should be a quick shot in a montage of alternate universes. It would be better to leave Electro out of the series for now and use one of Spidey’s other villains instead. I’ve seen people bring up J.K. Simmons’ version of J. Jonah Jameson appearing in Far From Home as an indication that this has been going on already, but that performance is as close to universally popular as any comics-to-screen translation in recent memory; it’s also not so much pulling Jameson in from the Sam Raimi films as it is reusing a perfect casting choice as opposed to choosing a replacement that inevitably suffers in comparison. I wouldn’t be surprised if this story ends up being false.

I think that’s what most people think about him, which is why this seems like such a bizarre thing to do, and why I’m taking this with several mines worth of salt at the moment. Why even use the multiverse with Spider-Man? In Far From Home, it was an illusion from Mysterio, so it made sense, but I’d rather they stick with keeping Spidey relatively grounded till he has to team up with the others for something.
Please no. Once they used his powers as a quick dental fix, I threw in the towel.
I didn’t see “The Amazing Spider-Man” for the longest time. The trailer, the costume, and the overall look of the film rubbed me the wrong way. I caved and ended up renting it on Redbox, and for the most part I thought it was a decent film (with the exception of the costume).
I didn’t hesitate to rent the sequel, but I regretted this decision almost immediately…
I know some people legitimately take issue with race swapping characters, but I try and take things on a case by case basis. That said, I thought Jamie Foxx was a bizarre casting choice and his character only made things worse for me.
I know more about some Spider-Man villains than others, my knowledge base for Electro was limited but I knew enough to understand the Electro wasn’t a goober with a vendetta. It baffles me that the people behind the movie thought their interpretation of Electro was a good idea. I had other serious issues with the movie but I’ll leave it at that.
