Raiders owner and bowl-cut aficionado Mark Davis arrived at the team’s facility Monday evening and personally sought out Gruden. After the meeting, Schefter’s source reported that Gruden will no longer be with the organization.
This comes on the heels of the loss at home to the Chicago Bears in a lifeless effort. But the bigger story is the New York Times report – previously covered on this site – of Gruden’s comments in 2011 about NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith, as well as other disparaging emails about NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell (well-deserved).
The bulk of the conversations were had between Gruden and Bruce Allen, who was, at the time, president of the Washington Redskins (now Football Team) over a seven-year period. Highlights of the emails include calling Goodell a “faggot” and a “clueless anti football pussy.” Alleging that Goodell pressured Jeff Fisher, then-head coach of the St. Louis Rams, to draft “queers,” referencing Michael Sam. How this is homophobic, considering Gruden was the head coach of Carl Nassib, the first openly gay player on an NFL roster, is beyond me. The Times continued to describe – in shock and horror, of course – that Allen and Gruden exchanged photographs of cheerleaders in only bikini bottoms! How dare two grown men do such a thing! In a nod that Gruden was a supporter of the “Let’s Go Brandon” movement long before it was cool, he was critical of Uncle Joe, whom he called a “nervous clueless pussy.” I think he’d make a great head coach, the instincts on this guy way back in 2012!
Gruden, 58, was an analyst for ESPN’s Monday Night Football coverage at the time of the email exchanges but was lured back to the sidelines of the team he coached from 1998-2001 on the back of a 10-year, $100 million contract.
Lost in the shuffle is that this was a private conversation between two friends. So what this means is that the words we say, over a decade ago, using the phraseology of the time, or the actions we do, based on impossible to disprove allegations, is up for trial in the court of public opinion; by 2021’s Twitter Mob Standards? No dice. Never back down, Gruden must have gotten a large portion of his $100 Million to fall on the sword.
All Gruden did is tell the truth. America is so messed up now it is not even funny.
