Jon Jones Recent Arrest Details Emerge and It’s Not a Pretty Picture

The sky is blue, the grass is green, and Jon Jones has been arrested for the fifth time since 2012, and the third in as many years. He has had ten fights since then, so if he can keep that 2:1 fight-to-arrest average intact, he’ll have more than just the first fight against Alexander Gustafsson in the Hall of Fame!

Details of the most recent arrest, which occurred in the morning hours of Friday, September 28th, have emerged Tuesday; they involve battery, domestic violence, and injuring or tampering with a vehicle. (That’s quite a story in and of itself.)

Las Vegas Metro Police reported to Caesar’s Palace shortly after 5 AM to a “domestic disturbance” call in a hotel room where Jones was found with a woman bleeding from her nose and mouth and had dried blood on her dress. The police were called after hotel security noticed blood after Jones’ fiancée, mother, and three children came down to the lobby to request another room key at 4:30 AM. Asking if the fiancée, Jesse, was okay, she began to cry and “said she was scared to return to her room.” The security guard who made the call did it at the behest of the youngest child, so claims the guard.

Police received the description of the scenario “involving a white female who was ‘bleeding from her nose/mouth’ and a ‘black male adult who is a professional MMA fighter.’” (This was the weekend that UFC was hosting International Fight Week, so that description is SUPER helpful). When the cops did arrive and saw, “Bones” was walking near the hotel, he was stopped and detained. Here’s where the fun begins.

Jones quickly became agitated (as you may expect) and was “irate and smashed his head onto the front hood of the LVMPD patrol vehicle,” denting the hood and chipping the paint of the squad car. Given the gravity of the situation, that’s some much-needed comic relief.

After being handcuffed, the emotions on display ranged from wanting to sue the world for this injustice “on the biggest night of his life” (weird, especially as your kids are there) to joking about wanting to fight all the cops to see how many he could take on at once. One of the cops familiar with Jon’s work threatened him with a taser if he kept up the act because he knew the police training couldn’t hold back the 2-time light heavyweight champion.

Once the shenanigans calmed down, Jesse was questioned about the events that led up to the police getting involved, and her account was that she was sleeping when Jon arrived back to the hotel room and that he was in a foul mood. Asked if he had gotten rough with her, the reply of “Not too physical, but a little bit, yeah,” was what was reported. She claimed he touched the back of her head and pulled her hair to prevent her from leaving the room, yet did not hit her. Police, doing as they do in these situations, observed a swollen, bloody lip and mark on her cheek. Once assessing the hotel room, there was more blood on her sweatshirt and the bedsheets in the room.

No photographic evidence or verbal testimony was permitted, and ultimately, Jones was released on $8,000 bail with an October 26th court date.

Posting an Instagram story earlier this evening, Jones promised to make serious changes in his life (heard that before), and it starts with giving up booze. “I have way too much trauma to consume alcohol, my brain simply can’t handle it anymore, now is the time to work harder than ever,” Jon said while training and promising to come back better than ever. So, I guess the threats to leave the UFC over money concerns in August are done and dusted?

When asked about the news, Dana White said he’s not shocked anymore when stuff like this happens with Jon in Las Vegas and that he has a lot of demons. He would not punish Jones further until it played out in the courts, as a good employer should (and was practice for a long time, up until due process died with the #MeToo movement). Without the cooperation of the fiancée in this situation, it’s tough to forecast this going any further than the October court date.

The next little while will be telling. That’s a lot of time to make incredible life changes, but also enough time to revert to the old ways and crash another car or two. When correct, Jon Jones is the best fighter in the world. It’s been a long time since we have seen that on a consistent basis, so here’s hoping 5th time’s a charm, and he can put his demons away for good.
