Jurassic World Rebirth Images From Entertainment Weekly Show No Dinos

The dinosaurs are back, but not as you knew them. Or maybe as you knew them, it’s hard to tell at this point. Another Jurassic Park/Jurassic World movie is on the way, this one called Jurassic World Rebirth, probably because it has a new set of actors replacing Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, and whoever else were regulars in the Jurassic World series. This time, Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey are the stars, with Rupert Friend and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo in supporting roles. As with Daredevil: Born Again, Entertainment Weekly has some exclusive images from Jurassic World Rebirth, plus information about the film from director Gareth Edwards, who previously helmed Monsters, Godzilla (2014), and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. You can tell it’s a Gareth Edwards Jurassic movie because the pictures have no dinosaurs in them. I’m only half kidding; I know it’s early, and they probably don’t want to show too much yet. (And Scarlett Johansson is enough to get anybody interested.) But Gareth Edwards’ thing is using as little monster payoff as possible and telling his audience it’s because he likes Jaws – or sometimes having his fans argue that for him. And, unsurprisingly, he brings up Jaws in this Entertainment Weekly piece, wherein the three lead characters, played by Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey, are likened to Brody, Hooper, and Quint from the shark attack classic. To be fair, Edwards is invoking Steven Spielberg in general since he’s the guy who gave us the only Jurassic Park movie that should have been made (plus the first unnecessary sequel). It’s smart marketing, but I’ll believe this movie has a Spielberg vibe when I see it. However, EW points out that while the three Jurassic World films from Colin Trevorrow were all successful and made over $1 billion apiece, each made less than the previous one, with the final of the three, Jurassic World Dominion, making about half what the first one did. That’s a similar pattern to the Star Wars sequel trilogy, and I wouldn’t be surprised if part of the reason Gareth Edwards was chosen was to keep costs down by having as little dino action as possible.

As for any Jurassic World Rebirth plot reveals, it’s the same stuff from August: the dinosaurs are dying out because of environmental changes since the prehistoric era; a team headed by mercenaries and scientists – funded by a pharmaceutical company – search for the remaining creatures so they can extract their DNA to make some kind of miracle drug that will cure all the sickness ever; a shipwrecked family joins the fun; hijinks presumably ensue. Gareth Edwards elaborates slightly, saying that there is no real love story among the main characters but instead a bit of a power struggle to see which one of them is the alpha. (Does anyone think it won’t be Scarlett Johansson? Aside from being the sole woman in the current year, she’s also the biggest star among them by a mile.) It doesn’t sound all that interesting to me; it’s just an excuse to keep this franchise running well past its creative sell-by date, and considering how much money the Jurassic films continue to make, it’s hard to blame them. Universal is going to keep producing these as long as they can and as long as audiences keep showing up, especially if they’re able to make them cheaper, which is what I expect from this one. Edwards praises the relatively scarce special effects shows in Jurassic Park and says he tried to recapture that aesthetic. (He’s absolutely right when he says movies “got lost along the way” in terms of CGI following the landmark first film.) Scarlett Johansson’s salary may be the most expensive element of Jurassic World Rebirth.

Thanks again to Entertainment Weekly for the pictures!
