Killers of the Flower Moon Trailer Insists on a Theater Visit

Martin Scorsese is rolling out another epic. Apple TV has released a trailer for Scorsese’s upcoming film Killers of the Flower Moon. Based on the non-fiction book Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, the film revolves around the murders of several members of the Osage Native American tribe just as oil is struck on the tribe’s land. Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemons, Brendan Fraser, John Lithgow, and Lily Gladstone star in the film. Killers of the Flower Moon will have a limited theatrical release on October 6, 2023, before going into wide release on October 20; it will then stream on Apple TV, but a launch date hasn’t been set. Trailers for Martin Scorsese movies have half their work done already; all you have to do is flash the man’s name, and we know it’s a must-see. Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, two of his most frequent stars (and two of the best actors around), don’t hurt either. But even aside from the big names, Killers of the Flower Moon looks great. I don’t know the true story behind this film, so I’m going into this fresh, as if it were any original story. As such, I’m grateful that the trailer reveals little, although you can see the seeds of many of the known plot points, such as the murder victims presumably being in the caskets or that wonderful shot of the oil derricks as the car passes along the road. In addition to the two megastars, Killers of the Flower Moon has a great supporting cast, especially Brendan Fraser, John Lithgow, Jesse Plemons, and Barry Corbin. This movie is going to be a long one at 206 minutes, almost three and a half hours, and I can already hear the critics who mewled about the length of The Irishman writing the first few paragraphs of their reviews five months before the film is released. But if any filmmaker has earned the right to take his time telling a story, it’s Scorsese. This is one to see in theaters, and not only because most people don’t subscribe to Apple TV.
