Daniel Craig has gone from spy to detective in the first trailer for Rian Johnson’s Agatha Christie-inspired film Knives Out. Check out the trailer below:
The Knives Out trailer opens with Lakeith Stanfield’s Detective Elliot beginning questioning the victim’s (Christopher Plummer) family as he tries to establish a rapport with Jamie Lee Curtis’s Linda Robinson, with Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc in the background, observing the proceedings. While at first, I wondered why Elliot would ask how the party was, I suppose it makes sense if he’s trying to put people at ease. From there, we get a myriad of family squabbles, particularly involving Chris Evans, who plays the murder victim’s grandson and absolutely steals the show. This part is almost reminiscent of some of Evans’ earlier scenery-chewing roles prior to his time as Captain America. In addition, you can see a lot of the Agatha Christie influence here, especially if you’ve read her iconic novel And Then There Were None (aka Ten Little Indians) or seen Kenneth Branagh’s recent adaptation of Murder of the Orient Express. Daniel Craig carries himself much in the same way Poirot did in that film, with Blanc letting people know that nobody has been ruled out as a suspect. However, I feel this ends up being one of the biggest drawbacks of the Knives Out trailer. I understand the reasoning behind having Craig in the background, but it just felt like the character should’ve been front and center a bit more, particularly since up until this point, all the pieces about this project had done just that. Here’s hoping we’ll get a bit more insight into Blanc as the marketing campaign continues to heat up.
