The Hollywood Reporter exclusively reveals that Disney+ ordered a live-action Gargoyles series. Running from 1994-1996 (excluding the heretical 1997 Goliath Chronicles), the cult-classic Disney series followed a clan of living gargoyles. Mythical and literary characters like MacBeth and Anansi the Spider were introduced to many kids through this show, but its dark storylines and tragic characterization also offer plenty for adults to enjoy. Gary Dauberman is set to write, executive produce, and showrun the reboot. James Wan’s production company, Atomic Monster, will also executive produce. The duo are known for horror movies, including the Conjuring franchise.
This is a bad idea. I don’t see any reason to retell the same story, and there’s no way they can do it better. I don’t see any indication that series creator Greg Weisman is attached, and that’s another mark against it for me. When Greg was unceremoniously dropped for the third season, the results were disastrous. But here Disney goes again. I felt the same when the original Avatar creators dropped out of Netflix’s remake; I do not trust these companies to uphold the tone or message of the originals. I doubt they even want to. I usually try to keep an open mind and give things a chance, even if I end up wishing I could un-watch them. But I have absolutely no faith in this. A live-action Gargoyles isn’t a good idea conceptually; how is this supposed to look? Will they faithfully recreate the Gargoyles, mutates, London Clan, etc., in CGI? I don’t think so. And what about the original cast? Keith David is irreplaceable as Goliath.
But what do you think? Are you interested in this at all? Are you enjoying the fact that Disney wants to resurrect and reanimate everything? Let us know in the comments!
