Sony’s Spidey-adjacent also-rans keep coming out of the woodwork, as the studio has released a trailer for Madame Web. The film focuses on Cassandra Webb, a paramedic who discovers she can see the future and links up with three other women who are being hunted by a villain named Ezekial Sims. Dakota Johnson stars as Cassandra, with Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Emma Roberts, and Adam Scott in supporting roles. Directed by SJ Clarkson, Madame Web is scheduled to be released on February 14, 2024, though the trailer just says, “Coming soon.” You can watch the Madame Web trailer below:
The trailer fits with this entire project in that it’s… strange. I don’t know what made Sony decide to produce a Madame Web movie other than simply mining through Spider-Man’s supporting characters and playing eenie-meenie-miney-moe. She’s not a strong enough character to anchor a story, which is probably why there are three different Spider-Women backing her up. And the trailer doesn’t give the impression that the movie earns her elevation to lead; it looks like a cheap, slapped-together flick that deserves to come out in the February cinematic wasteland. SJ Clarkson has only directed television before MadaSpiderme Web (although she’s done some great television, including an outstanding episode of Dexter), and I’ve never heard of Claire Parker and Kerem Sanga, the two writers, before, probably because they have nothing much to their credit. I think Madame Web is destined to disappear quickly, from theaters and from the world’s consciousness.
