The Hollywood Reporter reports that Morbius writers Matt Sazama and Burke Sharpless have signed on to write a Spider-Man spinoff centered around Madame Web. This telepathic Spidey-supporting character was first introduced in the comic books in 1980. The Madame Web project joins a plethora of previously announced Spider-Man-related films. So far, a Spider-Verse sequel (and spinoffs), as well as Black Cat and Silver Sable stand-alones, are in the works. The latter two will eventually result in the Silver and Black team-up that will be directed by Gina Prince-Blythe Wood.
This news is incredibly exciting. I love the fact that Sony is keeping it in the Marvel family. This will assist in giving Morbius and Madame Web some continuity. Likewise, it will facilitate a singular vision for the universe that they have been building since Venom’s release last year. In addition, it’s fantastic that one of the best characters on the animated series will be making her cinematic debut. Whenever she would show up on screen, you always had to pay special attention, given the fact that she would often tie into the endgame of the series. In a way, she could possibly serve as the Nick Fury of the Spider-Verse and tie everything together. This is true especially because Madame Web often watched over not only Spidey’s destiny but several other characters in the multiverse as well. With all that in mind, I can’t wait to see what Sony has in mind for this fascinating character.
